PhD: Heat removal potential in urban configurations measured at high resolution in wind and water tunnel

The combined effects of urbanization and global warming give rise to temperature increases in urbanized areas. This has a negative impact on the health and thermal comfort of inhabitants, as well as on building energy consumption. Effective ventilation of urban outdoor areas is important for increasing urban air quality as it facilitates the removal of heat and pollutants. The the PhD project is aimed at improving the understanding of urban flows through experiments performed at the ETH/Empa wind and water tunnel facilities. High frequency and high resolution Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) provide detailed information about the flow and temperature fields at different scales (from the building scale to a small city scale). The PhD project will identify strategies which can mitigate the impact of extreme weather and improve the the thermal comfort and health of inhabitants in urban areas.
