Profile

Hannelore Derluyn received her master degree in Civil Engineering from K.U. Leuven (Belgium) in July 2006, magna cum laude. Subsequently, she was a research affiliate at the Laboratory of Building Physics at K.U. Leuven. She started her PhD studies at this laboratory in January 2008, with a grant from IWT-Flanders, and pursued her PhD research at the Chair of Building Physics at ETH Zurich (Switzerland). She obtained her PhD degree from ETH Zurich in November 2012, and received the ETH Medal Award for her dissertation. During her PhD studies, she was an academic guest at Princeton University (USA) and Ghent University (Belgium). She is currently postdoctoral researcher at the Chair of Building Physics at ETH Zurich.

PhD: Salt transport and crystallization in porous limestone:

neutron – X-ray imaging and poromechanical modeling

Abstract: Many damage cases in civil constructions and in cultural heritage are related to the presence of salts. This dissertation combines experimental and numerical methods to improve the understanding of salt crystallization damage in porous building materials. Physical degradation due to salt crystallization is modeled using a continuous-discontinuous framework. The model covers heat, water and salt transport processes, salt crystallization, deformation and cracking processes. The experimental work is performed on a layered oolitic limestone, namely Savonnières limestone. Two salts are studied, sodium sulfate and sodium chloride. Transport (capillary uptake and drying) of water and salt solutions is visualized and quantified using neutron radiography. The location of precipitated halite (NaCl) crystals is visualized with neutron radiography as well. Zones of thenardite (Na2SO4) precipitation are located based on X-ray micro-tomographic datasets. Deformations caused by the formation of cracks are seen in the neutron images during the wetting or drying process. The crack patterns that develop due to crystallization damage are visualized by X-ray micro-tomography. The developed numerical model is validated using the experimental results. The modeling results show a good agreement with the experimental data. Therefore, the model developed in this dissertation can be applied with confidence by engineers and conservators to predict salt damage risks in porous building materials.
